Discover the rejuvenating power of skin boosters in this guide. Whether you're looking to diminish fine lines, improve skin texture, or simply achieve a radiant complexion, skin boosters can work wonders for your skin. In this article, I'll show you how these innovative treatments work and why you need them in your skincare routine.
Skin boosters are a type of regenerating injectable treatment that contains a hyaluronic acid-based formula. As a naturally occurring substance in our bodies, hyaluronic acid helps to retain moisture (it can hold 1,000 times its own body weight in water!) and keep our skin looking plump and hydrated. When injected into the skin, these boosters stimulate collagen production, improving elasticity and firmness over time.
But what sets skin boosters apart from other treatments? Unlike traditional fillers, which target specific areas, skin boosters are designed to hydrate and improve the overall quality and health of your skin. They work beneath the surface, enhancing and moisturising the skin from within and deliver long-lasting, natural-looking results.
Whether you're dealing with the effects of ageing, environmental damage, or simply want to enhance your natural beauty, skin boosters are a game-changer.
What are skin boosters and how do they work?
As mentioned above, skin boosters such as Profhilo, Seventy Hyal and Revitrane HA20 are formulated with a hyaluronic acid gel. Hyaluronic acid exists naturally in our own bodies and it is a powerful humectant that attracts and retains water molecules, providing deep hydration to the skin.
As we age, the natural production of hyaluronic acid decreases, leading to dryness, dullness, and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Skin boosters work to replenish the hyaluronic acid levels in the skin, restoring its natural moisture balance and promoting a more youthful and refreshed appearance. They don't target specific lines and wrinkles in the same way fillers do, but instead have an overall rejuvenating effect and improve the overall health and quality of the skin - texture, elasticity and firmness.
The benefits of using skin boosters.
The benefits of using skin boosters are numerous and really do transform the appearance and health of your skin. That's why I love them at R.SKIN because they are targeting the overall quality of the skin. Here's a mini rundown on some of the key benefits:
1. Deep hydration: Skin boosters provide intense hydration to the skin, improving its moisture levels and reducing dryness. This helps to restore the skin's natural barrier function and promotes a plump, dewy complexion.
2. Improved skin texture: Skin boosters can improve the overall texture of the skin, making it smoother and more refined. They help to minimise the appearance of pores, fine lines, and wrinkles, giving the skin a more youthful and radiant appearance.
3. Increased collagen production: By stimulating collagen production, skin boosters help to improve the skin's elasticity and firmness. Collagen is a key structural protein - acting like scaffolding within the skin - that keeps the skin supple and resilient, and its production naturally declines with age.
4. Natural-looking results: Skin boosters deliver natural-looking results that enhance your natural beauty. They work gradually over time, allowing for a subtle and gradual improvement in the skin's appearance.
5. Versatility: Skin boosters can be used on various areas of the face, including the cheeks, forehead, under-eye area, and lips. They can also be used on other parts of the body, such as the neck, décolletage, and hands, to improve their appearance, especially if you have areas of "crepey" skin.
The process of having skin boosters
The process of getting skin boosters typically involves several steps to ensure safe and effective treatment.
Here's what you can expect at R.SKIN:
An initial consultation with myself: here we'll discuss your skin concerns, goals, and medical history. I'll assess your skin and determine if you are suitable for skin booster treatment.
Preparation: 30 minutes prior to treatment I'll apply a topical numbing cream to minimise any discomfort during the procedure. You can enjoy a coffee and complete some paperwork during this time! Then I'll cleanse and disinfect your skin and mark out the injection sites over the treatment area to ensure even distribution and the best results.
Injection: I'll then inject the skin booster into the targeted areas using a fine needle. As we've applied a numbing cream it is unlikely you'll experience any pain or discomfort from the injections.
Post-treatment: After the treatment, you may experience some redness, swelling, or bruising, which is normal and usually subsides within a few days. Drink plenty of water and refrain from touching your skin to minimise the risks of infection.
Skin booster aftercare and maintenance
As mentioned above, to ensure the best results and longevity of your skin booster treatment, it's important to follow proper aftercare and maintenance routines:
Keep the treated area clean: Gently cleanse the treated area with a mild cleanser and lukewarm water. Avoid harsh scrubbing or exfoliation that could irritate the skin. Refrain from touching!
Moisturise & drink plenty of water: Apply a hydrating moisturiser to the treated area to maintain its moisture levels and promote healing. Look for a moisturiser that is suitable for your skin type and contains ingredients like hyaluronic acid or ceramides.
Protect your skin: Protect your skin from the sun by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Sun exposure can damage the skin and compromise the results of your skin booster treatment.
Avoid excessive heat: Avoid hot baths, saunas, and steam rooms for at least 48 hours after the treatment, as heat can increase swelling and irritation.
Frequency of skin booster treatments
Once you've had the first round of skin booster treatment, it's recommended to have another treatment every 6 months in order to maintain optimal results. The treatment itself takes place over a series of appointments, 4 weeks apart:
Profhilo = 2 treatments, 4 weeks apart
Seventy Hyal = 3 treatments, 4 weeks apart
Revitrane HA20 = 3 treatments, 4 weeks apart
These skin boosters that are based on very similar hyaluronic acid formulations and essentially have the same purpose. (Profhilo was the first to market and originally held the patent on the technology, but when the patent ran out, other more affordable options hit the market. To discuss this more, please get in touch).
Common misconceptions about skin boosters
There are several misconceptions surrounding skin boosters that can lead to confusion. Here are some common misconceptions debunked:
Skin boosters are (not!) the same as dermal fillers: While both skin boosters and dermal fillers are injectable treatments, they have different formulations and purposes. Skin boosters focus on hydration and overall skin improvement, while dermal fillers are used to restore volume and enhance specific areas of the face. Skin boosters will not change the shape of your face or facial features!
Skin boosters are (not!) only for mature skin: Skin boosters benefit clients of all ages and skin types. They can be used to prevent and treat early signs of ageing, as well as improve the overall health and appearance of the skin. The skin's hyaluronic acid content starts to decrease in as early as twenty years of age and is reduced to half by the age of fifty - so it's a good idea to start treating your skin early-on!
Skin boosters are (not very!) painful: The discomfort experienced during a skin booster treatment is usually minimal. Topical numbing cream is applied before the procedure to reduce any discomfort, and most people find the injections to be relatively tolerable.
Conclusion - to boost or not to boost?
Skin boosters are a powerful tool in rejuvenating skin. With their ability to hydrate, improve texture, and stimulate collagen production, they can transform your complexion - diminishing fine lines to restoring a plump, dewy appearance. Skin boosters offer a range of benefits for individuals of all ages and skin types and are easily maintained once a year.
