Three Unknown Benefits of Botox: Not Just for Wrinkles

Updated: Nov 16, 2023

The primary reason many of us get Botox for cosmetic reasons is of course to reduce lines and wrinkles. The major function of anti-wrinkle injections - otherwise know as Botox - is to relax the muscles of the face in order to reduce dynamic lines and wrinkles.

Botox works by blocking the nerve signals in the muscles that are injected, preventing them from contracting. This causes the injected muscles to relax, reducing lines and wrinkles such as the frown lines, crows feet and forehead lines.

However, as well as its wrinkle-reducing magic, Botox also has some pretty impressive secondary benefits for the skin.

Botox can help improve acne-prone skin

Conveniently when botulinum toxin A is injected into the skin, oil production is reduced in those areas, which in turn leads to a reduction in the main acne causing bacteria. With the majority of us having an oily t-zone, the forehead in particular can be area that is susceptible to acne. By having botox for anti-wrinkle treatments in this area, a secondary (but pretty awesome) benefit is its oil controlling and acne-reducing potential!

Botox can be a mood booster - via the facial feedback loop

Did you know that when you pull a facial expression, this sends feedback to the brain which then triggers a hormonal response. This hormonal response can have a knock-on effect on our mood. When injected with botulinum toxin, the muscles that usually contract when you're feeling down or even angry - such as the glabellar region, the group of muscles we use to frown - are unable to activate, and therefore will not send those messages to the brain. This does not trigger a hormonal response, and therefore this can help maintain mood.

Botox can help improve skin elasticity

Another pretty cool secondary benefit of botox is that it can help improve the skins elasticity in the long term. With repeated injections in the long term, the restricted muscle movement will also help preserve the elasticity of the skin... notably because the skin just isn't being manipulated by the muscles. With skin elasticity being one of the main indications of ageing skin, this gives botox a more long term anti-ageing benefit as well as the temporary benefits of relaxing the muscles.
