Chemical peels - brush used to apply chemical peel solution

Chemical peels are expertly formulated treatments designed to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the growth of new, healthier skin. I believe in embracing your natural beauty and making it better, and chemical peels can offer a personalised approach to skincare. By targeting specific skin concerns such as fine lines, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and uneven texture, chemical peels can rejuvenate your skin from deep within.

But how do these peels work? The secret lies in their potent blend of natural acids, exfoliating agents, and antioxidants. These carefully balanced ingredients penetrate the skin, exfoliating the outer layers and revealing a fresh, vibrant complexion underneath. Over time, as your skin regenerates, you'll notice a significant improvement in texture, tone, and overall radiance.

The science behind chemical peels

The original chemical peel - Cleopatra bathed in goats milk for glowy skin

Chemical peels have been used for centuries to improve the appearance of the skin. In fact Cleopatra use to bathe in goats milk to maintain her glowing, youthful complexion caused by the lactic acid in the milk working in the same way a chemical peel does today. The science behind peels' effectiveness lies in the carefully selected ingredients that make up the peel solution. These ingredients typically include natural acids like alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), as well as enzymes and antioxidants.

When applied to the skin, these acids work by breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells, allowing them to be easily sloughed away. This exfoliation process reveals fresh, new skin underneath, promoting cell turnover and stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. As a result, fine lines and wrinkles are minimised, and the skin appears smoother and more youthful.

In addition to exfoliation, chemical peels also have the ability to penetrate deeper into the skin, targeting specific skin concerns. For example, peels containing ingredients like glycolic acid are effective at treating hyperpigmentation, while salicylic acid is known for its ability to unclog pores and reduce acne breakouts. By customising the peel solution to address individual skin needs, dermatologists can achieve remarkable results.

Chemical peels are not a one-size-fits-all solution, and the concentration of the peel solution can vary depending on the desired results and the client's skin type. I'll work with you to determine the most suitable peel for your skin concerns.

Different types of chemical peels

Chemical peels come in various strengths and formulations, each targeting different skin concerns and providing different levels of exfoliation. The three main types of chemical peels are superficial, medium, and deep peels.

Superficial peels are the mildest form of chemical peels and are often referred to as "lunchtime peels". These peels typically use AHAs like glycolic acid or lactic acid to gently exfoliate the outermost layer of the skin. Superficial peels are great for improving skin texture, reducing mild discolouration, and giving the skin a healthy glow. They require little to no downtime and can be done on a regular basis for maintenance. Check out my Rejuvenating skin peel which contains pyruvic and lactic acid for a quick skin glow-up!

Medium peels are more intense and penetrate deeper into the skin. They use stronger acids like trichloroacetic

acid (TCA) to remove damaged skin cells and stimulate collagen production. Medium peels are effective at treating moderate skin discolouration, fine lines, and acne scars. They may require some downtime for the skin to heal and recover, but the results are often more significant than with superficial peels.

Deep peels are the most aggressive type of chemical peels and are typically performed by dermatologists or plastic surgeons. These peels use strong acids like phenol to deeply penetrate the skin and address severe skin concerns such as deep wrinkles, sun damage, and precancerous growths. Deep peels require a longer recovery period and should only be carried out by a medical professional.

Benefits of chemical peels for skin rejuvenation

Chemical peels offer a multitude of benefits for skin rejuvenation, making them a popular choice for those seeking to improve their complexion. Here are some of the key benefits of chemical peels:

1. Exfoliation: Chemical peels effectively exfoliate the skin, removing dead and damaged skin cells to reveal a fresh, youthful complexion underneath. This exfoliation process also stimulates cell turnover, resulting in smoother, more radiant skin.

2. Reduction of Fine Lines and Wrinkles: By promoting collagen and elastin production, chemical peels can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The exfoliation also encourages the growth of new skin cells, which can further improve skin texture and elasticity.

3. Improvement of Skin Tone and Texture: Chemical peels can even out skin tone by reducing hyperpigmentation, sunspots, and melasma. They also refine the skin's texture, making it smoother and more even.

4. Acne Treatment: Chemical peels containing salicylic acid or other acne-fighting ingredients can help unclog pores, reduce inflammation, and control acne breakouts. They can also minimise the appearance of acne scars over time.

5. Boosted Confidence: Improved skin appearance can have a significant impact on self-esteem and confidence. Chemical peels can give you the boost you need to feel more comfortable and confident in your own skin.

Preparation for a chemical peel treatment

Before undergoing a chemical peel treatment, it's important to properly prepare your skin to ensure optimal results and minimise any potential risks. Here are some essential steps to take before your appointment:

1. Consultation: Schedule your free skin consultation to discuss your skin concerns and determine if a chemical peel is the right treatment for you. I will assess your skin type, evaluate any underlying conditions, and recommend the most suitable peel strength and formulation.

2. Skincare regimen adjustments: In the weeks leading up to your chemical peel, it's crucial to adjust your skincare routine to prepare your skin. Your skincare professional may advise you to discontinue the use of any harsh exfoliants, retinol-based products, or other potentially irritating skincare ingredients that can make your skin more sensitive to the peel.

3. Sun protection: It's important to protect your skin from sun damage before and after a chemical peel. Avoid excessive sun exposure and always wear broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF to shield your skin from harmful UV rays. Sun protection is crucial as the newly revealed skin after a peel is more susceptible to sun damage.

By following these preparatory steps, you can ensure that your skin is in the best possible condition for the chemical peel treatment, maximising its effectiveness and minimizing any potential complications.

What to expect during a chemical peel treatment

During your chemical peel treatment, I'll guide you through each step of the process. Here's what you can expect during a typical chemical peel:

Client undergoing a chemical peel treatment

1. Cleansing: The treatment area will be thoroughly cleansed to remove any dirt, oil, or makeup. This step ensures that the peel can penetrate the skin effectively.

2. Degreasing: I'll apply a degreasing solution to ensure there are no oily residues on the skin. This will prevent heat spots, and ensure the peel works optimally.

3. Application of the peel solution: I'll apply the chemical peel solution to the treatment area using a brush. The peel solution may contain different types of acids, such as glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or lactic acid, depending on your specific skin concerns and the desired depth of the peel.

4. Tingling or mild discomfort: You may experience a tingling sensation or mild discomfort as the peel solution starts to work. This is normal and typically subsides within a few minutes. I'll use a handheld fan to calm any discomfort - you can just relax whilst I fan away!

5. Timing: The peel solution will be left on your skin for a specific amount of time, determined by the peel's strength and your skin's response. The peel solution will then be neutralised or washed off, depending on the peel used.

6. Soothing and moisturising: After the peel solution is removed, I'll apply cool compresses to soothe the skin, followed by a post peel balm to help calm any redness or irritation. The balm contains broad spectrum SPF 50 which is essential to use to protect the skin in at least the first few weeks post-peel (I use it daily anyway as part of my skincare routine - even in winter!)

7. Post-treatment instructions: I'll provide your with post-treatment instructions, including skincare products to use, how to care for your skin, and any potential side effects to watch out for.

By understanding each step of the chemical peel treatment process, you can feel more confident and prepared when undergoing this transformative skincare procedure.

Aftercare and recovery tips for chemical peels

Chemical peel aftercare

Aftercare is crucial to ensure proper healing and maximise the benefits of your chemical peel. Follow these essential aftercare tips to support your skin's recovery:

1. Gentle cleansing: Use a gentle cleanser to wash your face for the first few days after the peel. Avoid scrubbing or using harsh exfoliants that can irritate the newly treated skin.

2. Moisturise: Apply a soothing and hydrating moisturiser to help restore the skin's barrier function and prevent excessive dryness. Look for products that are specifically formulated for post-peel care.

3. Sun protection: Protect your skin from the sun at all costs. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF, seek shade when possible, and wear a wide-brimmed hat to shield your face from direct sunlight. This is crucial to avoid post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation!

4. Avoid picking or scratching: It's essential to resist the temptation to pick at any flaking or peeling skin. Let it naturally shed on its own to avoid scarring or additional skin damage.

5. Avoid strenuous activities: Refrain from engaging in strenuous activities or exercises that can cause excessive sweating and potentially irritate the treated skin. Give your skin time to heal and recover.

By sticking to these aftercare tips, you can ensure a smooth recovery process and maximise the long-term benefits of your chemical peel treatment.
