MICRONEEDLING

Microneedling is one of the most effective and safe treatments for overall skin rejuvenation. It is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that’s used to treat a variety of skin concerns, resetting our skin's growth factors to create new, collagen-rich tissue for a smooth, rejuvenated complexion.

Microneedling

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

01

What is it?

Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that involves using a device containing fine needles to puncture the skin. The purpose is to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin, which stimulates the body's natural wound healing processes. This, in turn, promotes the production of collagen and elastin, two proteins that contribute to the skin's youthful appearance. The microneedling process can help improve various skin concerns, including fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, stretch marks, and overall texture and tone. Microneedling can be performed by dermatologists, plastic surgeons, or trained skincare professionals. It's essential to ensure that the procedure is done by a qualified individual using sterile equipment to minimise the risk of infection and achieve the best results.

03

Does it hurt?

Microneedling can be an uncomfortable sensation, especially when you are not used to the feeling. However I always begin shallow and increase the depth of the needle to your tolerence.

What are the benefits?

Improved Skin Texture and Tone: Microneedling stimulates collagen and elastin production, which can lead to smoother, firmer skin and a more even complexion. Reduced Fine Lines and Wrinkles: By promoting collagen formation, microneedling can help diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, particularly those caused by ageing or sun damage. Minimised Scars: Microneedling can help reduce the appearance of acne scars, surgical scars, and stretch marks by breaking down scar tissue and promoting the growth of new, healthier skin cells. Diminished Hyperpigmentation: Microneedling may help improve skin discoloration and hyperpigmentation by promoting the turnover of skin cells. Enhanced Absorption of Skincare Products: The micro-channels created by microneedling allow skincare products to penetrate deeper into the skin, increasing their effectiveness. Non-Invasive Procedure: Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that typically requires little downtime compared to more aggressive treatments like laser therapy or chemical peels. It targets and resets all the different cell types required for overall skin rejuvenation. Suitable for Various Skin Types: Microneedling is safe for most skin types and tones, making it a versatile option for many individuals seeking skin rejuvenation. Long-Lasting Results: With a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart, microneedling can provide long-lasting improvements in skin texture, tone, and overall appearance. It's important to note that individual results may vary, and the effectiveness of microneedling can depend on factors such as the depth of the needles used, the specific concerns being addressed, and the individual's skin type and condition. Consulting with a qualified skincare professional is essential to determine if microneedling is the right treatment for your specific needs.

04

When will I see results?

Most client will notice an improvement in their skin a week or so after the first treatment, however it is advised to have a full course of treatments - 1 every four weeks for around six months to see the best results. The results of microneedling are not permanent, as the natural aging process and external factors can affect the skin over time. Microneedling results can last for several months to a year, depending on various factors such as skin type and condition.

BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

Before your microneedling appointment, there are several things you can do to prepare and ensure the best possible results:

  • Limit sun exposure and avoid tanning beds for at least a week before your appointment. Sunburned or tanned skin can increase the risk of complications and may affect the results of the treatment.

  • Stop using retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) 5-7 days leading up to your appointment. These ingredients can increase skin sensitivity and irritation during microneedling.

  • Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment to keep your skin hydrated and ensure optimal healing after the procedure.

  • If possible, avoid blood-thinning medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or certain supplements (e.g., fish oil, vitamin E) for about a week before your microneedling appointment. These medications can increase the risk of bruising and bleeding during the procedure.

  • Avoid wearing makeup or skincare products on the day of your appointment. Arriving with clean, bare skin will allow your skincare professional to perform the procedure safely and effectively.

  • While microneedling typically requires minimal downtime, you may experience redness, swelling, and minor discomfort afterward. Have your appointment at a time when you can rest and avoid strenuous activities for the remainder of the day.

THE TREATMENT ITSELF

The appointment will last around one hour. After we've gone through the appropriate forms and discussed what to expect from the treatment and your aftercare, I'll thoroughly cleanse and sanitise the skin. I'll work on the cheeks first, then the chin, nose and finally the forehead as this can be a particularly sensitive area. I'll begin gently and slowly increase needle depth to your tolerance. Following the microneedling treatment you'll have some red light therapy to reduce redness and instigate the healing process. I'll then add a hyaluronic acid to seal the skin.

Aftercare

  • For the first 3-5 days skin may feel dry and tight. Use hyaluronic acid and moisturisers containing ceramides to alleviate and soothe.

  • Apply SPF the following day and try to use mineral make up only. Do NOT apply SPF the same day.

  • After about 2 days to a week (as soon as is comfortable to do so) return to your normal skincare products. A higher dose of retinol/ Vitamin A, means more beneficial microneedling results, although if you are new to using Vitamin A start off with a lower dosage.

  • Avoid direct sun exposure for 10-28 days afterwards.

What to expect:

DAY 1: Skin may feel dry & tight, and may still appear red or slightly flushed. There may be slight puffiness or bruising.

DAY 2: Skin may feel dry & tight. There may still be slight redness. Bruising starts to subside.

DAY 3: Skin pink with puffiness subsided

DAY 4-6: Skin may begin to shed, normal skin colour

DAY 7: No signs of procedure

For best results a course of 6 treatments every 28 days is recommended

Skin Clinic Evesham

"I hadn’t ever had a skin peel so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but Rachel took me through the process thoroughly and made me feel comfortable at ease throughout and I enjoyed the process. My skin looks and feels refreshed and healthier even after just the first treatment. I’m looking forward to my second peel in the new year. Highly recommended"
